Holy cats, I've bound off! It's not completely done yet -- I had a bad start to the knot border, and need to frog/rework a handful of border rows -- but it's done enough that I can look at it on myself in the mirror and think to myself, "hey, I'd like another one of these". Not the fingering version, next time.

Yep, this one's been a WIP for two and a half years. Sometimes you wonder if a project is cursed. The body of the shawl was fine, but I think I started the border four times in four different yarns. I finally put it away without getting a handle on the cable work.

I pulled it out a few weeks ago, having gained more knitting experience, and started on the border again in the same yarn as the body. I had a brief moment of panic when I thought I'd forgotten to ensure I actually had enough of the same yarn to finish the project, but realized the rest of the dye lot was put away with the rest of the fingering yarn. Whew!

I finally found my groove with the cable work, and I think the lessons I learned here will help me with more advanced cable work in the future. The first time I had color-coded the cable stitches, but the colors were arbitrary and I was having a hard time remembering what cable to do for which color. This is my second attempt at it, and this time the colors have more meaning. I've used warm colors (pink, orange, yellow) for front cables and cool colors (green, blue, purple) for back cables -- warm colors advance (to the front), cool colors recede (to the back) so I know which way I'm pulling the stitches. It's easy enough for me to tell whether a cable has 3 or 4 stitches, and I know I'm always putting two stitches on the cable needle except for the green one. Finally, on this chart, if the purl mark is on the right of the chart symbol I'm purling the first two stitches off the needle; if it's on the left, I'm purling the stitches on the cable needle; and of course I'm not purling at all if there's no purl dot. Feels good to finally know what I'm doing with this chart!
